The Yu-Gi-Oh! universe was born in the mind of artist Kazuki Takahashi and first appeared in the Japanese comic book Shonen Jump in 1996. An instant hit, the comic has spawned a cartoon television show, a collectible card game, several Game Boy® Color and Sony PlayStation® games as well as other licensed merchandise. In Japan, Yu-Gi-Oh! has already sold more than 3.5 billion cards, 23 million comic books, 10 million related books, 7.5 million videogames and has generated in excess of $2 billion in merchandise sales. Yu-Gi-Oh! follows the adventures of Yugi, a young boy who possesses the Millennium Puzzle that allows him to transform into his alter-ego, the Game King, whenever he is challenged.

Yu-Gi-Oh (Japanese:..., yûgiô, yuugiou in Romaji, Japanese word for the "King of Games") is a popular Japanese anime and manga franchise that involves characters who play a card game called "Duel Monsters,"(called "Magic and Wizards" in the manga, but for continuity in this document the card game will be referred to as "Duel Monsters") wherein each player purchases and assembles a deck of "monsters" in order to defeat one another.

The Yu-Gi-Oh manga, created in 1996 by Kazuki_Takahashi, was one of the most popular titles featured in Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump and is nearing the end of its run in the weekly manga anthology. The anime was first broadcast beginning in 1998 on Asahi TV and after 150 episodes, it moved to TV Tokyo and has recently aired the 200th episode.

In recent years, both the manga and anime have also been brought to the USA. In the USA, the animated TV show, Yu-Gi-Oh! King of Games is broadcast on KidsWB and leading card manufacturer, Upper Deck is distributing the Official Trading Card Game. The manga runs in Viz's Shonen Jump and the anime is broadcast as part of Kids_WB, on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and in syndication in many other places.

The Yu-Gi-Oh franchise has since grown to incorporate the trading card game featured in the anime and manga, a series of video games by Konami, toys, and many other products.
